Sauder Orchard Hills 4-Drawer Chest, Carolina Oak finish

I didn't expect too much when I purchased this. It was bought for use in a spare bedroom that will only see use once or twice a year. I think it will last a good while until I refurnish the spare bedrooms in my home. It's not a high dollar solid wood piece of furniture but it is a solid set of drawers and for the money paid I think it was worth it. Would I pay more, probably not. Assembly is required and will take a little while but isn't complicated. Directions were easy to follow and complete. You only need a hammer and a philips screwdriver to assemble. You won't need a drill with screwdriver bit as there isn't that much 'turning' required. The wood is particle board, I'd say medium density. Not like a rock that you can't get anything into but not soft and crumbly either. Screws held well in the wood. Package arrived undamaged and none of the pieces were scratched, no corners messed up either. After assembly the drawers operated well but if you have any sticking you might check the sliders on the sides as they adjust a little with the screw used to attach it to the drawer. Mine worked out fine. The bottoms are finished, not real thick but there is a center brace under the bottom to give it support. Will easily support clothing as it was intended to do. The wood look finish is fine, seems solid and well done. For a 'pre-manufactured' piece of furniture I have no complaints. Assembly was as I anticipated, the look and functionality was as I expected so for the price paid I'm not disappointed.

This is not the easiest to assemble, because it does have a lot of parts, but the parts are clearly labeled/distinguishable with good, detailed instructions, and the resulting product is incredibly sturdy. The frame is solid particle board, not cardboard (except for a small part of the back) and the rails are metal, not plastic. The color is very nice (photo is pretty accurate) and it looks like quality furniture - not cheap crap. The drawers roll fairly well, but I can't say yet how well they will hold up after a year of usage.Also, the top is the perfect size for a cat to sprawl out on, so that is a pro or con depending on your preferences.

I have owned several pieces of Sauder furniture and have always been pleased. I currently have a set over twenty years old. This dresser is no exception. It has a slightly different assembly process from previous items. I like the solid back on this model as opposed to nail-on cardboard.The new locking cams have a plastic piece that expands when tightened and may be a onetime use item. I'm not sure if you can remove them if you make a mistake in the construction process. Maybe one of the one-star raters can advise on that. Where you assemble it makes a big difference. I used a worktable in the garage. I don't recommend a carpeted surface due to the lack of support and the nap may catch in the joints when you begin to tighten the cams.The directions are concise and must be followed in the order dictated for a good assembly. The hardware (screws, cams, et al) is contained in a plastic multi-pouch with each item labeled. The wood dresser pieces are not labeled but can be identified by matching them with the picture in the directions.A new feature is two small hourglass shaped plastic pieces that hold the three top trim parts together until they are mounted on the cabinet. They are flimsy so handle them carefully. Once you get the trim mounted with screws it is solid.There are predrilled pilot holes for all the necessary screws. I have found that marking these holes with a Sharpie make them easier to see from the side to align the screws. A flashlight helps too.I put a small drop of Elmers glue in the holes of the handle fixtures when installing them. I have never had a handle come off.A weak point of all dressers like this is the base. Once completed the two side pieces and the front trim is all that make contact with the floor. If you slide it on a carpet it will catch and stress the whole structure and possibly break the trim braces. I resolved this by putting a piece of plywood on the base to strengthen the structure and facilitate moving it. Not everyone will have this capability so I recommend at a minimum to remove the drawers prior to moving the cabinet and to lift, not slide.The drawer bottoms are thin and fit in slots cut into the wood pieces. They can be overwhelmed if too much pressure is put on them. I put some hot glue on the underside of the drawer to help prevent that.For a self-assemble dresser at this price it's as good as it gets. You will get out of it what you put into it. With a few additional enhancements it will last several years. I expect mine to.
