I work for a delivery company that does a lot of flat screen TVs, usually up stairs. How well does this work on moving narrow items?
I'm about to move my refirgerator out of my home and down about 7 stairs. Would this work better than an appliance dolly? Two men in decent shape.
How long and wide are the straps?
Can this be used by 1 person? I need a strap to help lift hot water heater that wont drain. Bear huging 40 gal or larger water heater is not fun.

Makes moving a breeze!

The Shoulder Dolly moving straps were a lifesaver during my last move. With two people, they make lifting bulky furniture and heavy items so much easier and way more manageable. They take a lot of the strain off your back and arms by distributing the weight more evenly, which really reduces the physical toll—especially on your shoulders and lower back. They’re simple to adjust and use, and once you get the hang of it, they make a huge difference. If you’re moving or rearranging furniture, these are a must-have. So much easier on your body, and surprisingly effective!

The best thing for heavy objects

I was skeptical when my buddy told me to order this. I thought “No way this actually helps”.Was I ever wrong. These straps are absolutely amazing. We have a well made sofa with built in (unremovable) mattress that weights upwards of 600+ lbs.Lifting this originally took at least 3 people and multiple stops to make sure we had the grip strength for the job. These straps made lifting this couch take less than 3 minutes to get from our Pod to inside the house.100/100 stars, this thing is awesome.

Led to some comical couple moments but ultimately did work

I really wish I had pictures of my 4'10" wife and my 5'10" self carrying our 8' Ikea sleeper couch through our basement or our 180lb 7' long TV console (in a box) around our house and down our steep basement hatchway stairs but we were too busy trying not to destroy our house to get our kids to snap photos. The couchWe needed to move the couch roughly 40' through a 36" door in our basement. Being 8' long it stretched the limit of the Shoulder Dolly for us (even though it said it could handle 9'+). The tricky part was that we had to tilt the couch on its side to made it through the door so the weight was not balanced. We found after trial and error that we had to align the strap off center to compensate for the weight imbalance. My wife found moving the couch difficult even with the strap although we ultimately did it. We definitely couldn't have moved it with our hands alone for how unwieldy it was.The TV consoleThis box was roughly 7' long and weighed 180lbs. This object was a much better fit for the Shoulder Dolly being a rectangle. We had to move it through our front door, around our house and down a very steep set of basement stairs before moving it into place. This time we much more easily lifted the object, taking some lessons we learned from the last step. The biggest mistake we made was having me go first. I read that when traversing stairs the taller person should go first but I believe that is only true going up stairs. Going down it seems the opposite is true so that the taller person can get the object over the stairs. When going down both the front steps and the basement by me going first, my much shorter wife couldn't raise it high enough even when the strap was fully tight and I nearly pulled my back out trying to compensate. When we got to the basement bottom, it worked much better. Still, same as with the couch, we couldn't have physically moved this with our hands. The workers who brought it into our house seemed to have used a commercial grade version of the Shoulder Dolly themselves.Plusses- Well made straps and buckles- Does what it says and really does help move heavier objects without needing arms or brute force- The balance with the single strap under the object worked better than I thought it would.- Can also use as forearm straps (although we didn't try that method)- Has a pretty large object length limit although I'm questioning if it can handle a 9' object as our 8' object didn't leave much strap length.Minuses- Needs more instruction for various scenarios such as up and down stairs. There are decent instructions overall but we would have had less struggles- My wife at 4'10" found the straps a bit hard to use. They didn't seem to fit right and she was wanting move adjustability with how they fit her. She also thought the strap might have been slipping in the buckle a bit.- I wish there was a bag included with the straps for the price as getting them back into the box is a pain and they will sit until the next large object needs to be moved.- The price is high for what it is

Highly recommend

This made moving heavy and bulky items so much easier. I could easily help my husband move our queen mattress and our bedroom dresser. We were both very impressed with how efficient this product was

Worth the money

These are amazing. Heavy duty for fridges and dressers and mattresses. Perfect for heavy applications. They are big and bulky for light duty. Your back will thank you.

Works so far, but needs improvement and better instructions

We were able to use this product successfully to move a heavy TV set. When we first got the TV, we moved it "by hand" and one of us got a bad muscle strain when the TV started slipping out of our grasp. This time, with the Shoulder Dolly, we were able to move it across a room, out a door, down four steps, and set it on the ground, without much trouble.Sounds great, right? The problem is, the main carrying strap -- the big 5" wide one that passes underneath the big object -- was too long. To perform our move, we had to fold that strap over and pass it through one of the two harnesses at double thickness. It worked, but it is NOT described in the manual.Instead, the manual suggests that you contact the company to BUY MORE STRAPS of differing lengths if you face the situation we did. Gee, that's helpful advice to get when you open the package ready to perform a move. And where in this product listing does it mention the need for extra straps? Nowhere. The strap included in this "Light Duty" kit is 12 feet long. If you follow the directions, you'll feed that strap once through each shoulder harness, and it will be gripped in place. And it does work like that. But any excess will just hang down toward the ground. If you and your partner only need six feet of strap to pick up an object at an appropriate height, you will have three feet at each end dangling down. Who needs a big cloth strap around one's legs and feet, risking a trip?By the way, I don't think you should worry about the size of this thing unless you're really small or really huge. Our lifting team is average in size, and the harnesses on us looked pretty much like they do in the photos here (and in the manual). The manual spends a huge amount of time explaining how to put the harness on your body -- which is pretty much a no-brainer -- but not much time explaining how to position your feet, or how best to raise and lower an item vertically. So the good news is that the "Shoulder Dolly" will indeed help to move a heavy object while not putting a lot of strain on wrists, elbows and arms. Also, IF you plan ahead with the precise length of the strap, and the height off the ground to which an object has to move (and where it starts), you can move it vertically without much trouble, too.But it's not self-explanatory, and it takes a lot of thinking to get something that starts out 30" off the ground, carry it laterally, then deposit it directly on the ground. The instructions seem to think that all your moving will be picking objects up from the ground and putting them back down at the same height. Also Note: the Product Description here says "Heavy lifting capacity: Up to 400 lbs." and "Helps you lift objects that you cannot lift comfortably on your own." Well, the "400 pounds" refers the weight rating of the fabric strapping! It does not give YOU a 400 pound "lifting capacity!"Right in the manual it says that the product does NOT increase your own inherent lifting ability. So don't expect to lift 400 pound objects if you can't bear that much weight on your back, or by any other form of lifting. The TV we carried weighed way less than that. So we knew we could lift it -- we just knew that it would be bulky and awkward because of its size and shape. That's what this thing is good for. If you keep that in mind, you can make a better decision about the purchase. It does not give you any more strength, and it does not provide any means for balancing the object being moved. You do have to use your hands for that.PRO: I'm glad we got it, since we accomplished our immediate goal, and we might be able to use the Shoulder Dolly for other tasks in the future. The product seems well made, it does have safety tags and warnings in the manual, so the manufacturer does seem safety-conscious.CONS:We had to ignore the instructions in order to use the product, which I hate doing, and I did not like the sneaky marketing of accessory products (like different length straps). My lifting partner was bothered by the lack of padding in the harness straps. I didn't notice it in this one-time move, but in a bigger move with more trips, I might. They could include pads without having to bump the price, seems to me.
