Medieval Tapestries Coloring Book (Dover Fashion Coloring Book)

A beautifully artistic coloring book for adults
This is definitely not your child's coloring book (or the coloring book you had as a child). From "Death on his Pale Horse" to "The Griffin Protects His Lady" there's something here for everyone, except maybe young children. It's a very detailed book. In fact if you have problems with your vision or hands -- you may want to pass. I have occasional hand troubles and will be skipping coloring in it on those days. It's also probably far too detailed for young children. Not to mention that death, unicorns in captivity, and Trojan war scenes may be a bit much for them (not that there's violence portrayed, there's not). You'll want to break out colored pencils or very fine tipped markers for most of these. There are some rare areas that are wide open, but for the most part these are highly detailed pieces that will test your coloring skills. An intro note in the book gives a brief history of tapestries and each page gives us the name / country of origin / year of the tapestry on the page we're coloring.A must for older kids who are too old for traditional coloring books and adults who love to color.

Not your run-of-the-mill coloring book!
Omg, this one is incredibly challenging...so much so it could probably take several months (or years depending on how often you color) to do every design in it. Some of the tapestries are so intricately detailed I have to keep my pencils sharpened to a fine point just to stay inside the lines.Normally I don't like already inked in parts (fashions are a no no), but in this case, I'm actually grateful that a few of the design backgrounds are blackened in.All in all an excellent adult style coloring book that will keep you occupied for many, many, MANY hrs. It's a great value considering how much time and effort it takes to do each design. With informative dates and descriptions printed below each depiction, it's educational as well as fun.Get your pencil sharpener ready (you'll need it!) and enjoy!

Unicorns!
I adore Dover coloring books. They are such great quality and much more fun to color than a kitten swatting a ball of yarn. This coloring book is no different. It is fabulous. It doesn't have any information about the symbolism seen in medieval tapestries, but if you look that information up, you'll find plenty of examples in this coloring book. An added bonus, there are several prints of the panels in the "The Lady With The Unicorn" series, so there are several unicorns in this coloring book. (An added bonus since I have a daughter who loves unicorns. There are lots of small details on the prints. Each tapestry has its information beneath it. (Name, year, country of origin.)

GREAT pictures on cheap paper....
This is a fantastic coloring book, I LOVE these kinds of pictures with all the detail, dont really like the ones that are "cutesy" with flowers and fish and so on. So I love the intricate design and the complexity of the pictures.HOWEVER, I do have a big complaint and that is these amazing pictures and are printed on what I would call "ordinary" paper, and printed on both sides. I use Gel Pens mainly for this intricate work and gel pens go through the page so the picture on the other side becomes unusable. That is a HUGE disappointment.I have the Outlander and Game of Thrones coloring books and those are printed on a heavier stock paper and only printed on the one side. Makes a huge difference. So while I love the pictures I am not really happy with the paper quality...

Wonderful illustrations, great relaxing pastime for young or old
I got this coloring book plus some quality pencils as a little gift for my sister..not only did she love them but her 5 year old grandson did too, and she told me how he asked her if he could 'color with her' and they spent enjoyable time together. The pictures are so whimsical and detailed, and give opportunities for using your imagination for picking different color combinations. This is a pleasurable stress reducer, almost a meditative activity that encourages daydreaming and recalls the free play of childhood, and a nice alternative to keeping your hands busy if you don't do needlework but want to pass the time.

Great for art students
I bought this for myself while I was taking a medieval art class, so it was great fun coloring in the tapestries we had learned about. When we went to the Cloisters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, it was even better to see the tapestries I had colored in real life! After coloring the whole thing in 'realistically' I decided to get another one and color everything in however I felt like it. As fun as it was to color them the first time around, unconventional color choices made the coloring experience even more enjoyable the second time!

I am describing this as an educational item as the ...
I am describing this as an educational item as the illustrations are based off medieval tapestries and there is a short description under each picture. Pages printed on both sides with thick paper. There is a total of 30 illustrations, with no duplicates. Only 9 are on the subject of Unicorns, of them only 3 feature an actual Unicorn. So do not be deceived if you are looking for a Unicorn coloring book, but you should buy anyways because coloring books that feature The Unicorn Tapistries are rare.
